The night The Pixies roared in Big Sur.

Updated: Aug 16, 2023

“I almost felt a little overwhelmed by [Big Sur]," Thompson said prior to his second performance. "I mean it was great, but it was surprising. It was so still and quiet. The stars. It was beautiful.”

On April 15, 2014, Big Sur was overwhelmed—in a good way—when Thompson returned to the Henry Miller Library for the third time. This time, was accompanied by his seminal alt-rock outfit, The Pixies.

Sandwiched between a pair of weekend shows at Coachella, The Pixies performed to about 400 people in Big Sur, a far cry from the many thousands they rocked for in Indio, California.

That didn't mean they toned it down one iota during the intimate show.

From "Bone Machine" to "Ed is Dead" to their unofficial anthem, "Where is My Mind?" (see video above), The Pixies delivered two solid hours of their quintessential brand of quiet-loud-quiet classics under the redwoods with a massive light show.

The night also marked one of the early performances from the band's then-new replacement for bassist Kim Deal, Paz Lenchantin (Entrance Band, A Perfect Circle). Her ear-to-ear smile made it obvious just how thrilled she was to have the opportunity.

In more recent, not-so-happy times in Big Sur, the Dolan Fire has swelled to more than 20,000 acres.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the displaced residents and the folks battling the blaze on the frontline.

Updated Dolan Fire info is available HERE.

Same goes for those affected by all of the large-scale burning ravaging areas throughout California.

Huge appreciation for all of the men and women who have been risking their lives for our safety, 24 hours per day.

If you can help in any way, here's a good place to start.

Godspeed.
