While the world was on pandemic lockdown, Malcolm & Marie was filmed on the down low at the Caterpillar House in Carmel, California.

From June 17 through July 2, 2020, the intense, love-on-the-rocks flick was shot entirely at a stellar, eco-friendly glass architectural masterpiece on California's Central Coast.

The creator of the HBO show Euphoria, Sam Levinson, is the producer/director/screenwriter behind the intimate film starring Zendaya (Euphora, Dune) and John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman, Tenet.)

Malcolm & Marie has yielded comparisons to Netflix's acclaimed Marriage Story.

The story (the script was penned in six days) is simple: A filmmaker and his girlfriend at their home after attending a movie premiere. Once home, they begin to look at their relationship. Things quickly go to shit from there.

"The cast and crew reportedly adhered to safety rules instated by the Writer's Guild,Director's Guild and Screen Actors Guild associations amid COVID-19," Elle reported.

There was a limited crew; everyone was tested for Covidand quarantined for two weeks before shooting began.

Harper's BAZAAR states, “A producer developed health precautions for the set with the help of production unions and a doctor's guidance. Cast and crew members wore masks, abided by social distancing rules, and were not allowed to leave the property. Even a chef quarantined with them on the premises; food was individually wrapped rather than served buffet style.”

Actors were in charge of dressing and mic-ing themselves. Crew members couldn't be near them without proper protective gear. Temperature checks were taken at the beginning and end of each day. Crew sanitized the set and gear. People were instructed to stay at least six feet apart unless necessary. Tissues were provided for touching door handles.

The Caterpillar House—the filming location—is more like the third star of the film than just another setting for a movie: It sits perched on the Santa Lucia Preserve's rolling hills and boasts "a strong connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, and main living areas that center informally on the kitchen." The excavated earth was used to build the home's walls, connecting the land and the structure.

Malcolm & Marie is currently available for streaming on Netflix (Netflix acquired the movie for $30 million.)
